What precautions should be taken during a stool culture?

These include: Wear protective safety glasses, gloves and laboratory coat when processing specimens. Use biological safety cabinets as needed. Do not eat, drink, smoke, apply cosmetics or manipulate contact lenses in work area.

These will grow only if they're already in the stool sample. If bacterial colonies form, the technician uses a microscope and chemical tests to identify them. If no disease-causing bacterial colonies form, the test is negative. This means there's no sign of a bacterial infection.
What if stool culture is positive?
Positive results mean bacteria, parasites, or other abnormal organisms were found in your stool culture. They may be causing your infection. Sometimes the test shows a false-negative result. This means the test missed certain infectious bacteria.
